Addressing Extreme Weather Related Diarrheal Disease Risks in the Asia-Pacific Region

Extreme weather events caused by climate change are killing people and making them sick around the world. Despite the best mitigation efforts, these threats will continue to increase in the near future due to the changes that have already occurred. This raises a fundamental question: how can we adapt to these new threats as a society to minimize the burden of disease?

We are a multinational consortium working on this issue with a particular focus on diarrheal disease. We are working to better understand the relationship between extreme weather events and diarrheal disease in the LMIC settings, and using this knowledge to develop an early warning system with a subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) lead time. Our primary goal is to reduce the burden of diarrheal diseases exacerbated by climate change and help communities adapt to the threats of climate change
